Imposter Syndrome: "I'm Not Smart Enough"

2026-04-20StudVent Team

One of the most heartbreaking survey responses we received was simply: 'I'm not smart enough......probably not even barely.' This is the textbook definition of Imposter Syndrome, and it is incredibly common among engineering students, especially in highly competitive Indian colleges.

The LinkedIn Illusion

Every time you open LinkedIn, you see a peer announcing a prestigious internship at Google, another showcasing their new open-source AI framework, and someone else boasting about their 5-star rating on CodeChef. Meanwhile, you are staring at a blank screen, unable to figure out why your basic API call is returning a 404 error. It is very easy to look at this disparity and conclude, 'I do not belong here.'

But what you don't see on LinkedIn are the hundreds of rejections, the late-night tears, and the thousands of hours of frustration that preceded that success post. Social media is a highlight reel. Comparing your behind-the-scenes struggles to someone else's highlight reel is a recipe for depression.

The Truth About Being a Developer

Here is a secret that senior developers know: Nobody knows everything. Software engineering is not about having a massive brain that memorizes all syntax; it is about having the resilience to Google things until you find the answer.

If you feel like you aren't smart enough, you need to reframe how you measure success:

  1. Stop Competing with the Prodigy: There will always be someone who started coding when they were 12. Ignore them. Your only competition is the person you were yesterday.
  2. Celebrate Micro-Wins: Did you finally fix that bug after 3 hours? Celebrate it. Did you understand a new data structure? That's a win.
  3. Embrace the Struggle: Feeling confused means you are learning. If you are always comfortable, you are not growing.

The tech industry doesn't just need geniuses; it needs persistent, hard-working people who don't give up when things get tough. You are smart enough. You just need more time and consistency.

Is your college doing the exact same thing?
